Prototype of my text based adventure released

Text Adventure Time!

The past months I’ve been wanting to learn a bit more about web programming, so I set out to make some sort of game. What I thought would be easy was to make a text based adventure game. It didn’t turn out to be easy, but I’ve learnt a lot.

The game is very similar to the old text based adventure games, but the difference is that you don’t do any typing while playing. You click and drag items to interact. It makes it easier to play the game (people have less patience nowadays) and it is easier to play it on mobile devices.

My plan is to develop the game a bit more with feedback from the internets and also make a website with a WYSIWYG editor so people can create their own stories and share them with friends.

The game uses regular HTML and CSS for displaying the stories. The functionality is javascript (jQuery). Stories are stored in a mySQL database and are transmitted via JSON. The community web site will be built using CodeIgniter.

Oh, I almost forgot… you can play the game here.

  1. I had a similar idea some time ago. But yours is a lot better made. “Back then” the games where quite confusing, you end up typing the wrong words over and over and reading things like: No you can’t do that. Or… you can’t use it here… There’s no need for this kind of thing nowadays.

    1. Hi Daniel! Yes, the games back then were good at the time, but now people are used to easier interfaces. That’s why I built this prototype. I’ve tried several times to make an editor so people can create their own stories and share/embed with their friends. It’s a big project that I don’t know if I’ll ever finish though 🙂

    1. Hi! Yes, they are a couple of months old. I haven’t had time do work on my game. The first version was a prototype, and I’ve started on a second version of the game and also an editor. My goal is to have a site where people can make their own stories and share them with others. Unfortunately my coding skills are not top notch, so it takes time. Since you like these kind of games I would be happy for some feedback 🙂

      1. Unfortunately, for me it’s the same. I have nothing currently visible.
My project is more focused on the adventure game like Point and Click, rather than like Zork and Infocom.
The project started in Flash AS2 and AS3. And recently, I decided to rewrite it in jQuery …
The goal is that anyone can easily create his interactive story via a dedicated back ofice and put online via a dedicated website.
Internet users can rate and comment the game, etc …
